Bob Smith terminals, also known as Bob Smith terminal networks, are
a technology used in Ethernet ports. This technology improves the
performance of Ethernet interfaces by using resistors and
capacitors to provide common-mode impedance matching. This helps
reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and improves signal
integrity. The "Bob Smith" technique uses a 75 Ohm resistor for a
common mode impedance match at each signal pair, collectively
connected via a 1000pF capacitor to the chassis ground. The
resistors are typically placed in series with each differential
signal line, and the capacitor is used for common-mode noise
filtering. The purpose of this termination technique is to match
the common-mode impedance of the transmission line, which helps
minimize reflections and maintain signal integrity.
