About Fused Quartz Glass

Fused quartz is an amorphous (glassy) form of silicon oxide (quartz, silica).

It is a typical glass with a long-range disordered atomic structure.

It provides a high operating temperature and low thermal expansion coefficient through cross-linking of the three-dimensional structure.

The use of fused quartz materials in precision casting shells has been increasing year by year,

especially in the surface layer of silica sol shells, and has achieved very effective results.

It has made great breakthroughs in the use and price ratio of zircon materials

and is a more ideal material for engineering applications.

Fused quartz is made by melting natural high-purity silicon dioxide in an electric furnace at a temperature above 1760°C and then rapidly cooling it.

This process transforms crystalline silicon dioxide into an amorphous glass melt.

The melting temperature of fused quartz is about 1713°C, the thermal conductivity is low, and the thermal expansion coefficient is almost the smallest among all refractory materials, so it has extremely high thermal shock stability.

Therefore, during the roasting and pouring process, the fused quartz shell rarely breaks due to temperature changes. It is an ideal refractory material for investment casting and can be used as a refractory material for surface or back coating, as well as a sanding material.

Features of Fused Quartz Glass

  • High Purity: Typically over 90% pure silicon dioxide.

  • Optical Clarity: Excellent transparency across a wide range of wavelengths.

  • Thermal Stability: Can withstand high temperatures (up to approximately 1,100°C).

  • Chemical Resistance: Highly resistant to most chemicals, except for strong alkalis and hydrofluoric acid.

  • Mechanical Strength: Relatively brittle but can be very strong under compressive forces.
