The two basic interface specifications for the QSFP+ optical transceiver are 40GBASE-SR4 and 40GBASE-LR4. The former is used in multimode applications, and the latter is used in single mode applications.

QSFP fiber optic transceiver is used as an optical fiber solution, both its speed and density are superior to the 4 channel CX4 interface.

Because it can support four channels data transmission at 10Gbps speed per channel at the same time, like port volume of XFP, so the density of QSFP can reach 4 times of XFP optical transceiver and 3 times of SFP+ fiber optic transceiver. So 4 channels QSFP interface with higher density than CX4 has been adopted by the InfiniBand standard.

The 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ optical transceiver conforms to the 802.3ba D3.2 (40GBASE-SR4) standard and uses the MPO/MTP optical fiber connector to realize the optical connection of 40Gbps. The 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ fiber optic transceiver is also transmitted through four channels, and the transmission rate is the same as the LR4. In data center, 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ optical module can be used together with multi-mode OM3/OM4 optical fiber to achieve 100m (OM3) and 150m (OM4) transmission, and realize the interconnection between two Ethernet switches.

The 40G SR4 QSFP+ optical transceiver is often used in 40G data transmission with the MPO/MTP fiber optic connector. Unlike the 40G LR4 QSFP+ optical module, it is often used for multimode optical fiber transmission, supporting about 100 meters OM3 fiber patch cord signal transmission and about 150 metersOM4 fiber optic jumper signal transmission. When the signal is transmitted at the transmitter, the laser array will first convert the signal to the optical signal and send it parallel through the ribbon multimode fiber. When the receiver receives the signal, the photodetector array converts the parallel optical signal into parallel electric signal.
