The Francis turbine was developed by James Bichens Francis around 1855. Its key characteristic is the fact that water changes direction as it passes through the turbine. In order for it to operate efficiently, water must reach all blades equally and flow is controlled by a set of valves or gates which curl around the turbine itself in a spiral shape.
