Dry chemical fire extinguishers are by far the most common fire extinguishers in the home. They can handle all three types of fires you would find in a kitchen or workshop: combustible solids like wood or paper, combustible liquids like gasoline or grease, and electrical fires. The idea behind a dry chemical fire extinguisher is to blanket the fuel with an inert solid (similar to dirt or sand). A dry chemical extinguisher sprays a very fine powder of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3, baking soda), potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3, nearly identical to baking soda), or monoammonium phosphate ((NH4)H2PO4). These solids coat the fuel and smother the fire.

Application Principle: It is specially suitable for extinguishing light metal fire, such as: magnesium, sodium, aluminum, molybdenum, lithium, potassium, or liquid light metal mixture (triethylaluminum, n-butyl lithium, tri isobutyl lithium). Because this kind of material belongs to light metal and easily reabsorbs oxygen and water in the air, it will produce oxidated and combustible hydrogen like and alkane gas, which will cause combustion and explosion. Due to the characteristics of this kind of products, it is difficult to put out the fire with ordinary fire-fighting equipment.In particular, it is worth mentioning that once a light metal fire occurs, it must not be rescued with water, otherwise a greater explosive disaster will occur. In case of such fire, professional class D fire extinguishing agent and class D fire extinguisher will be taken for effective fire fighting. Should there be no storage of such fire extinguisher equipment, sand and soil can be used to isolate it and cover it for self combustion to prevent further expansion of the disaster.
