ASTM A268 409 409L Stainless Steel Tubing,Welded Tube UNS S40900
ASTM A268 409 409L 1.4512 stainless steel is an alloy designed
principally for the automotive exhaust industry, although it has
been used successfully in other industrial applications. It
combines good elevated temperature corrosion resisitance with
medium strength, good formability and overall cost. 409L stainless
steel is highly resistant to high temperatures, achievable engine
and exhaust systems, and reduces the thickness of the exhaust
system to reduce exhaust emissions. Low cost, good flexibility,
high yield, easy replacement, and environmentally friendly new
products.
409 is a titanium stabilised ferritic stainless steel. Although
regarded as a general-purpose chromium stainless steel the primary
application for Grade 409 is automotive exhaust systems. Its
applications are those where appearance is a secondary
consideration to mechanical properties and corrosion resistance and
where some weldability is required.
Type 409 is a ferritic stainless steel that has a good combination
of heat resistance and corrosion resistance. Its titanium
stabilized low nickel content provides for an economical metal to
corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance.
Ferritic stainless steels are classified in the 400 series, usually with 10% to 30% chromium content, and are often chosen for their excellent corrosion resistance and elevated temperature oxidation resistance. With greater strength than carbon steels, ferritics provide an advantage in many applications where thinner materials and reduced weight are necessary, such as automotive emission control systems. They are nonhardenable by heat treating and are always magnetic.
Grade 409 / 409L is a titanium stabilized Ferritic Stainless Steel ,most commonly known for use in automotive exhaust systems. It features good mechanical properties and high temperature corrosion resistance. As a matter of fact, 409 / 409L as a chromium stainless steel can also be used in applications where weldability and corrosion protection are demanded. Although it is susceptible to rust formation, rarely used for decoration purpose, 409 / 409L stainless steel demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance against gas corrosion.
Due to good resistance to high temperature corrosion and gas corrosion, good mechanical property and weldability, 409 / 409L is extensively used in automotive applications, truck exhaust systems, agricultural equipment, as well as heat and gas turbine exhaust silencers.
Grade 409 / 409L, Type 409 / 409L, Inox 409 / 409L, AISI 409 / 409L, SUH409 / 409L, 1.4512, UNS S40900, UNS S40903, Acero 409 / 409L.
Common Trade Names
409 Stainless, 409 Stainless Steel
Features
Although susceptible to rust formation, making this grade of
stainless steel somewhat undesirable for decorative purposes, 409
is extremely resistant to various forms of gas corrosion.
Applications
409 is the perfect grade stainless steel to be used in automotive applications where visual appeal is not a top priority. For this reason and for its durability to gas corrosion, 409 is most commonly used in truck exhaust systems, agricultural equipment, and heat and gas turbine exhaust silencers.
