Gabion baskets, also called gabion boxes, are made of corrosion-resistant, high-strength and ductile galvanized wire or PVC coated wire through mechanical weaving. Wire material is zinc -5% aluminum alloy (galfan), low carbon steel, stainless steel or iron.
Gabion basket is an ecological grid structure. The stone cage net is mechanically woven from low-carbon steel wire with high corrosion resistance, high strength and ductility or PVC-coated steel wire. The box-shaped structure made by the net is the stone cage. The diameter of the low carbon steel wire used varies according to engineering design requirements. Generally between 2.0-4.0mm, the tensile strength of the steel wire is not less than 38kg/m2, and the metal coating weight is generally higher than 245g/m2. The diameter of the edge wire of the gabion mesh is generally larger than the diameter of the wire. The length of the twisted part of the double wire shall not be less than 50mm. To ensure that the metal coating and PVC coating of the twisted part of the steel wire are not damaged.
Tensile resistance: Above 38kg/m2 380N/mm

Introduction to the use of gabion baskets:
When your gabion walls are being used as erosion control, a civil
engineer experienced in flood control and erosion prevention,
should be consulted. Gabions are a proven method of halting river
bank erosion, for both large rivers and small streams that are
prone to flooding. Any river erosion system needs to be designed to
cope with the expected peak river flood volumes, as this is when
most damage to river banks and their erosion protection measures
occurs. Flood events are often described as 1 in 100yr floods or 1
in 50yrs floods, and any river bank protection system needs to be
able to cope with these flood events.
Bridge protection
Gabions offer excellent protection as soil stabilizers around bridges, bridge piers and abutment slopes. Generally, the degree of the slope to be protected shall determine what structure type is best suited for a specific application. Slopes with an angle of 1:1 or steeper usually require standard gabion retaining wall protection. Slopes with an angle of 1:1.5 or less may use a combination of gabion baskets and/or mattresses for slope protection.
Gabion mattresses used in channel for erosion protection
The cracks between the rocks used to pack gabions are frequently filled with soil to encourage plant growth, which makes gabion retaining walls ideal for projects where beauty is a must, such as controlling soil erosion along waterways that run through residential areas that need to be both long lasting and visually pleasing.
Advantages of gabion basket structure:
1. The flexible structure can adapt to the changes of the slope without being destroyed, and has better safety and stability than the rigid structure;
2. Strong anti-scouring ability, can withstand the maximum water flow speed up to 6m/s;
3. The structure is inherently water-permeable, and has strong tolerance to the natural and filtering effects of groundwater. Suspended matter and silt in the water can be deposited in the rockfill, which is beneficial to the growth of natural plants. Restore the original ecological environment.
