What is a Toroid Inductor?
A toroid inductor, used in electronic circuits, is an insulated
coil that is wire wound on a ring-shaped form which is made of
powdered iron, ferrite or another material. A toroid inductor is
mostly used at low frequencies where large inductances are
required. Toroid inductors have more inductance per turn, and can
carry more current, than solenoids with a core of similar material
and size.
Types of Toroid Inductors
There are many different kinds of toroid inductors and at Future
Electronics we stock many of the most common types categorized by
Case Size/Dimension, Current Rating, Nominal Inductance, DC
Resistance, Packaging type and Tolerance. The parametric filters on
our website can help refine your search results depending on the
required specifications.
The most common sizes for DC Resistance are 5 mΩ, 19 mΩ, 20 mΩ, 22 mΩ, 50 mΩ, 55 mΩ and 550 mΩ. Nominal Inductance can be between 10 µH and 920 µH, with the most common toroid inductors having a Nominal Inductance of 25 µH, 28 µH, 50 µH, 51 µH, 75 µH and 100 µH.
Applications for Toroid Inductors
Toroid inductors are used in medical devices, telecommunications,
musical instruments, industrial controls, refrigeration equipment,
ballasts, electronic clutches, electronic brakes, in the aerospace
& nuclear fields, in air conditioner equipment and in
amplifiers. Other applications include noise filtering for
switching regulators, power supplies, power amplifiers and triac
control circuits.
Choosing the Right Toroid Inductor
When you are looking for the right toroid inductors, with the
aolittel parametric search, you can filter the results by various
attributes: by Tolerance (± 50 %, ± 10 %,…), Current Rating (from
5.1 mA to 16 A) and Nominal Inductance (up to 920 µH) to name a
few. You will be able to find the right toroid inductors from
several manufacturers that can be used as common mode inductors, a
toroidal coil, smt inductors or for circuits that may require
toroid coils.
