How do shock absorbers work?
Shock absorbers are an integral part of a vehicle's suspension. The
function of the shock absorber is to absorb or dampen the
compression and rebound of the spring and suspension. They control
unwanted and excessive spring movement. Shock absorbers keep your
tires in constant contact with the road. When you encounter any
bumps or dips in the road, the vehicle's suspension and springs
move so the tires can maintain contact with the road and absorb
energy. A shock absorber resists the movement of a spring by
converting the spring's kinetic energy into heat. This thermal
energy then degenerates in the hydraulic fluid. The shock absorber
is an oil-filled cylinder. As your vehicle's suspension moves,
pistons move up and down through oil-filled cylinders. The up and
down motion of the piston forces a small amount of fluid through an
orifice (small hole) in the piston head. Since only a small amount
of fluid is squeezed out, this slows down the movement of the
suspension and inhibits spring compression and rebound. The shock
absorbers are also speed sensitive. This means that the faster the
spring moves, the more resistance the shock provides.
