Introduction

When the solution is evaporated in the evaporator, the secondary steam generated is no longer used, and this evaporation operation

is called single-effect evaporation. An evaporator using a single-effect evaporation method is called a single-effect evaporator. A single

effect evaporator is used when the required production capacity is small, the steam is inexpensive, the material is corrosive such that

very expensive structural materials are required, or the steam is contaminated so that it cannot be reused.

Single effect evaporators can be batch, semi-batch or continuous batch or continuous operation. Strictly speaking, the batch evaporator,

in which the feed, evaporation and discharge are the evaporators that are carried out step by step. This mode of operation is seldom used

because it requires a sufficiently large housing to accommodate the entire charge of the feed, and the heating element is placed relatively

low so that it cannot be exposed when the volume is reduced to the volume of the product. A more common mode of operation is semi-servo,

where the feed is continuously added to maintain a fixed level until the entire charge reaches the final density. Continuous batch evaporators typically have a continuous feed that iscontinuously discharged over at least a portion of the cycle. One method of operation is to recycle from

the sump to the evaporator and return to the original position until the entire sump reaches the desired concentration, thus completing the

processing in batches. The continuous evaporator is essentially continuously fed and discharged, and the feed and product concentrations

are substantially constant.
