It’s simply common sense that kids love plush toys. But… Why?
According to an article from Parents.com called First Friends: Toddlers and Stuffed Animals, “because kids know that a plush puppy or a princess doll
represents a living thing, they can relate and attach emotions to
it. Playing with these ‘friends’ allows kids to explore their
complex feelings.”
So playing with plush toys and dolls can help kids explore and
express their feelings and emotions more easily. But, what does
that mean, really? Exactly how does a teddy bear or a stuffed dog
make it easier for children to better understand themselves and the
world around them?
Luckily, that same article gives a quick list. You can read it more
in-depth by clicking HERE, but here’s the gist of it:
- Plush toys can help kids make that first step into independence. To little ones, the world can seem big, scary, and overwhelming
without the protection of their parents next to them at all times.
With a plush friend, kids can feel like they there’s a protector
always with them, giving them the confidence to explore the world
on their own more.
- Plush toys can help kids deal with and understand their more
complex emotions. According to Dr. Paul Donahue, a child psychologist in Scarsdale,
New York, “Children at this age can learn to manage their emotions
by role-playing with dolls. It gives them a way to communicate
their own experiences in a playful, nonthreatening manner.” So
rather than bottling up emotions that are too difficult to
understand, let alone express, kids can use their plush toys to act
them out in a way that makes sense to them.
- Plush toys can help kids hone their language and speaking skills. As children talk to their stuffed animals and other plush friends,
they’re also listening to the sound of their own voice, figuring
out on their own how best to say what they want to say, and
practicing their pronunciation skills. After all, the more children
talk – whether it’s to you or their stuffed animals – the more
practice they’ll get and the better at communicating they’ll
become.
- Plush toys can help kids get along better with others. Social rules and norms can be some of the most difficult lessons
to learn. Even some of us adults still struggle with it from time
to time. With plush friends and dolls, children can practice
navigating these obstacles safely by acting out scenarios and
experimenting with the different possibilities.
- Plush toys can help kids gain a sense of control over their world. As I mentioned before, to kids, the world can seem like a big,
scary, and overwhelming place, full of chaos and ominous
unknowables. However, when kids take the role of parent or
caregiver over their plush friends, suddenly part of that world
becomes perfectly manageable, understandable, and safe.
All of these benefits are great, of course, but thinking about them
a little deeper, I can’t help but notice… They don’t necessarily
pertain specifically to plush toys. Children, with their immense
imaginations, are perfectly capable of gaining all of these
benefits from something other than plush, such as a plastic doll,
an action figure, or even a wooden stick with eyes. So… what is it
about plush that’s so great?
The answer, I believe, is something many of us might not normally
consider to be particularly important: cuddliness, coziness,
softness, and huggability. The real benefit of plush toys isn’t
simply that they’re great for helping kids to communicate, share
their feelings, and understand their world. Plush toys are great
because they teach kids how to cuddle, how to hug, and how to be
more nurturing and loving. After all, it’s one thing to gain the
skills and confidence you need to navigate the world, it’s a whole
other thing to be able to navigate that world with a sense of
compassion and caring. I think that’s exactly what plush toys help
kids learn how to do.

A toy in the shape of an animal that usually has fake fur and is filled with soft material
There is not much difference between a stuffed toy and a plushie.
They both are both alike. Stuffed toys are basically toys which are
stuffed with soft fabric. A plushie is a common term to describe a
soft toy. Both plushies and soft toys have smooth plush fabric
attached on the outside and the inside is filled with pp cotton or
a similar material. Plushie is derived from plush soft toys or
plush animals.
The softness, cuteness, flexibility and resemblance to animals is
what makes stuffed toys unique.
