The hub is the part of a wind turbine that connects the blades to the main shaft. and ultimately to the rest of the drive train. The hub transmits and must withstand all the loads generated by the blades.The hub is subject to high mechanical loads, as it needs to transfer to the main shaft the torque produced from each blade as well as the trust force.

Large wind turbines are basically always using cast iron hubs, with a flange connection to the main shaft. As the part comes out in one single piece, not having the stress concentrations generated by the welding process.

Hubs come in many different shapes and configurations, mostly dependent on the type of generator used and the design of the rotor blades. The hub has a special structure, complex shape, large volume and difficult processing. Generally ductile iron castings, made of QT400-18AL, have strict requirements in terms of mechanical properties, metallographic structure, and chemical composition. They must undergo ultrasonic and magnetic particle inspections, and no shrinkage, cracks, cracks, pores, and slag inclusion defects are allowed.
