Analytical Balances
Analytical balance is the most important instrument for accurate
weighing in experiments, and it can be divided into mechanical and
electronic. Mechanical analytical balances can be subdivided into
ordinary analytical balances, air damping balances, semi-automatic
photoelectric balances, fully automatic photoelectric balances and
single-tray balances. These balances all use the principle of
leverage, but differ in structure and method of use. The mechanical
balance can meet the accuracy requirements of general quantitative
analysis, with a sensitivity of 0.1 mg. The biggest advantage of
this type of balance is its intuitive structure, but the balance
parts are complicated, and the operation is demanding and
time-consuming
Weighing method
(1) Direct weighing method: If the so-called solid sample is not
hygroscopic and stable in the air, the direct weighing method can
be used. First accurately weigh the mass of the clean container on
the balance, then take an appropriate amount of sample with a
medicine spoon and add it to the container, and weigh its total
mass. Subtract the two mass values to obtain the mass of the
sample.
(2) Decrement method: Weighing on an analytical balance generally
uses the decrement method. First weigh the exact mass of the sample
and the weighing bottle, and then pour a part of the sample in the
weighing bottle into the container to be filled with medicine until
the estimated amount is close to the required amount. Cover the
weighing bottle after pouring the medicine, put it on the balance
and weigh its mass accurately. The difference between the two
masses is the mass of the sample. If too much medicine is poured
into the container at one time, the weighing must be discarded and
never put back into the weighing bottle. If the poured sample is
not enough, add one more time, but the frequency should be less.
(3) Specified method: For samples with relatively stable
properties, sometimes for the convenience of calculation, samples
of specified mass can be weighed. When using the designated method
to weigh, put a watch glass on both sides of the balance pan (their
masses should be as close as possible), adjust the balance point of
the balance to be around the middle scale, and then add a weight
with a fixed mass to the left balance pan. Add the sample to the
balance pan on the right (it is more convenient to take and place
the sample) until the balance point of the balance reaches the
original value, at this time, the mass of the sample is the
specified mass.
