A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft
arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the
turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective,
which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is
highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is
integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable.
Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the
ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground
gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.
Compared to traditional horizontal axis wind turbines, vertical
axis wind turbines (VAWT) are becoming more and more popular. There
are three popular types of VAWT designs. they are
Savonius Wind Turbine - This is easy to build. The shape is simple.
Looks better than conventional wind turbines. But the speed is
limited. So not very popular on an industry scale. But for small
scale projects this type can be very handy
Darrieus Wind Turbines - The oval shape is characteristic of this
type. High speed can be achieved. It is therefore popular with
large energy producers. Not as simple as other types.
Helical Wind Turbines - Interesting helical wind turbines are very
popular in the residential wind market. Generates electricity even
with very little wind. There is no need to put it very high. The
design is complex. This can be a major disadvantage.
