A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft
arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the
turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective,
which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is
highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is
integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable.
Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the
ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground
gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.
In addition to installing separate Savonius and Darreeus type
blades, there is another VAWT that combines Savonius and Darreeus.
The combination of Savonius and Darrieus blades can produce high
performance and efficiency, as Savonius and Darrerieus blades each
have advantages and disadvantages.
For example, Savonius blades can operate at low wind speeds and
spin at high torsional speeds, but not at enough speed to generate
electricity. However, Darrieus blades have high rotational speed,
high wind speed and high rotation, and the use of DarrieusLift type
blades enables low noise or even no noise, which is beneficial in
residential areas, but has the disadvantage that it is not easy to
operate at low wind speeds.
Therefore, combining Savonius and Darrieus blades VAWT is able to
operate at low wind speeds and produce high efficiency, converting
wind energy into electricity, if the blades, alternator, materials
are specially designed, selected and machined, such as adding
dampers to reduce vibration and Noisy, full wind turbines can
produce high efficiency and can also be installed in any terrain or
building.
