Wind turbines are very different. While solar panels generate
energy because of changes at the atomic level, wind turbines
harness the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it into
electricity. The kinetic energy of the wind is captured by the
blades of a wind turbine, which always has three blades. The blades
then rotate, and inside the turbine there is a shaft connected to
the gearbox, which is turned by the rotation of the blades. The
gearbox in turn increases the revs by 100. The increased rotational
speed spins the generator, which produces electrical energy
(power).
Compared to solar panels, the process of generating electricity
from wind turbines is more mechanical. Because of this mechanical
process and the gearbox in the wind turbine, it cannot rotate in
the wind like a solar panel without any connection. When a wind
turbine is not powering equipment or charging batteries, its power
generation process does not stop. The blades continue to rotate and
the gearbox continues to work. The energy it accumulates has
nowhere to go but back to the turbine itself. After the system
heats up, the motor can burn out, potentially damaging the entire
turbine. To prevent this, the turbine needs to keep running under
load. When not charging the battery it is connected to, it needs
another outlet where the electricity it produces can be
transferred.
