The production of colored aluminum alloys usually involves dyeing and the production of aluminum oxide films. Dyeing is the process of infiltrating dyes into porous oxide layers to give the aluminum surface the desired color and gloss. The hardness of the aluminum oxide film is much higher than that of the aluminum substrate, and it also improves the metal's friction resistance and durability. There are many ways to classify aluminum alloy oxidation, and the most commonly used method is to divide it into three categories: Type I, Type II, and Type III.
Definition of anodizing
Anodic oxidation, electrochemical oxidation of metals or alloys.
It is an electrochemical process used to "grow" a stable oxide film
on the surface of a metal. Aluminum and its alloys form an oxide
film on aluminum products (anodes) under the action of an applied
current in the corresponding electrolyte and specific process
conditions. This oxide film has protective, decorative and some
other functional properties. If not otherwise specified, anodizing
usually refers to sulfuric acid anodizing.
In order to overcome the defects of aluminum alloy surface
hardness, wear resistance, etc., expand the scope of application,
and extend service life, surface treatment technology has become an
indispensable part of the use of aluminum alloys, and anodizing
technology is the most widely used and successful.
Application scope of anodizing
The thin oxide film has a large number of micropores, which can
absorb various lubricants and is suitable for manufacturing engine
cylinders or other wear-resistant parts; non-ferrous metals or
their alloys (such as aluminum, magnesium and their alloys, etc.)
can be anodized. This method is widely used in mechanical parts,
aircraft and automobile parts, precision instruments and radio
equipment, daily necessities and architectural decoration.
Characteristics of anodizing
Anodizing is an electrochemical reaction process carried out under
high voltage.
Anodizing takes a long time, often tens of minutes.
The thickness of the anodized film of aluminum and its alloys can
reach tens to hundreds of microns. It not only has good mechanical
properties and corrosion resistance, wear resistance, weather
resistance, but also has strong adsorption properties.
In general, the film thickness of aluminum alloy anodizing (Type II
Anodizing) is 5-8μm.
Ordinary aluminum alloy anodizing (Type II Anodizing) is not
suitable for cast aluminum. Because the anodizing effect of cast
aluminum is not good, the surface is not shiny, and the color can
only be black.
