- Fermentation:
- The sugars are fermented using specific microorganisms (usually
bacteria) to produce lactic acid.
- Polymerization:
- The lactic acid undergoes polymerization to form PLA. This can be
done through:
- Ring-Opening Polymerization: Where lactide—a cyclic dimer of lactic acid—is polymerized in the
presence of a catalyst.
- Direct Polymerization: Lactic acid is polymerized directly under controlled conditions to
form PLA.
3. Processing Techniques
- Injection Molding:
- PLA can be melted and injected into molds to create various
products, from containers to disposable cutlery.
- Blow Molding:
- Used for making hollow objects like bottles.
- Extrusion:
- PLA can be extruded into sheets, films, or filaments for 3D
printing.
