When you think of traditional bakeware, metal and glass are the
first things that come to mind, but silicone baking molds is becoming more common. The silicone baking dish is not only food and oven safe, but also comes in a variety of
colors, shapes, and sizes, making it easy to make custom meals.
However, some home cooks are hesitant to use silicone for fear that
the material is not as safe as the metal and glass sheets they are
used to. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recognized the material
as food safe in the 1970s. This means that the silicone itself will
not get into the food when the temperature changes.
If you're planning on diving into the world of silicone bakeware,
be sure to look for ones that are made from 100% food-safe silicone to ensure quality.
If you're not familiar with silicone, it's a soft, stretchy
material. According to experts at Iowa State University (opens in a
new tab), silicone is "made from a mixture of silicon, a natural
element in the earth's crust, that combines with carbon and/or
oxygen to form a rubbery substance."
Silicone can be molded into almost any shape, so you can find
bakeware in a wide variety of styles not found in traditional
metals and glass. Classic baking molds such as bread pans, muffin
pans and muffin pans are also made from silicone. This material can
also be used as flexible molds for cakes and baking sheets.
Another advantage of silicone is that it is non-stick and easy to
clean. Not only can this material be washed by hand, but it can
also be washed in the dishwasher, and you can boil it if you need
to sanitize your baking dish.
