An ignition coil is an essential component of the ignition system in an internal combustion engine. It is
responsible for transforming the low voltage from the battery into
high voltage needed to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the engine's cylinders.
Here is a description of an ignition coil and its functioning:
Construction: An ignition coil is typically a cylindrical-shaped
device made of a primary winding, a secondary winding, and an iron
core. The primary winding consists of a few hundred turns of
relatively thick wire, while the secondary winding consists of
thousands of turns of much finer wire. The iron core is positioned
between the primary and secondary windings to enhance the magnetic field.
Function: The ignition coil's primary function is to convert the low voltage (typically 12 volts) from the battery into a high voltage (ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 volts) required to create a spark
at the spark plugs. This high voltage spark is essential for
igniting the air-fuel mixture in the engine's combustion chamber.
Operation: The ignition coil operates based on the principles of electromagnetic induction. When the ignition switch is turned on, current flows from the
battery through the primary winding of the coil. This current
creates a magnetic field around the iron core. When the current is interrupted or rapidly switched off, such as
when the ignition points or electronic ignition module open, the magnetic field in the core collapses, inducing a high voltage in the secondary winding.
Spark Generation: The high voltage generated in the secondary
winding of the ignition coil is transferred to the distributor or directly to the spark plugs through spark plug wires. At the
spark plugs, the high voltage jumps across the electrode gap,
creating a spark. This spark ignites the compressed air-fuel
mixture in the engine's cylinders, initiating the combustion
process.
Distributor and Distributorless Systems: In older ignition systems,
the ignition coil was connected to a distributor, which distributed the high voltage to each spark plug in the correct
firing order. In modern vehicles with distributorless ignition systems, each
cylinder has its own ignition coil mounted directly on the spark
plug or in close proximity to it. This configuration is commonly
known as a coil-on-plug (COP) system.
Ignition coils are designed to provide high voltage output and
efficient energy conversion for the internal combustion engine in a
vehicle. Such coils are typically able to generate 20,000 to 50,000
volts of electricity, an amount necessary to create a powerful
spark at the spark plugs and ignite the air-fuel mixture in the
cylinders.
This energy conversion is achieved through two different types of
windings in the ignition coil. The primary winding is made of
thicker wire and typically carries a low voltage current of 12
volts from the vehicle’s battery. The secondary winding has a much
higher number of turns of finer wire, and it is responsible for
generating the high voltage output.
Ignition coils can vary in configuration based on the type of
ignition system employed in the vehicle. In some vehicles, there is
just one ignition coil that distributes the high voltage to each of
the spark plugs, while in distributorless systems every cylinder
has its own ignition coil mounted to the sparkplug or close to it.

Ignition coils are a vital component in many gasoline-powered
vehicles with internal combustion engines, notably those used in
the automotive industry. Their primary purpose is to provide the
high voltage needed to create a spark at the spark plugs, igniting
the air-fuel mixture in the engine's cylinders.
The specific applications of ignition coils are varied. Passenger
cars, ranging from compact sedans to luxury vehicles, use them to
ensure reliable ignition and optimal engine performance for
everyday driving. Sports cars and high-performance vehicles often
require higher voltage output for more efficient combustion and
power delivery while SUVs and Crossovers are fitted with ignition
coils to accommodate their increased size and weight. Trucks and
vans, such as pickup trucks, delivery vans, and utility vehicles,
are also reliant on ignition coils for reliable ignition while
motorcycles need compact and lightweight coils due to the limited
space available.
