Working Principle of Shaded Pole Motor


When power is supplied to the stator, magnetic flux is induced in the main part of the poles. This flux induces a voltage in the shielding coil. This acts as a secondary winding. According to Lenz's law, the direction of current should be opposite to the magnetic flux entering the coil. This acts as the secondary winding of the transformer.


In the core region, when a single phase is applied, alternating flux is generated. This flux is fractionally linked to the shadow coil. Then, a voltage is induced in the coil due to the change in flux linkage. Therefore, the shaded portion is short-circuited, thereby generating a circulating current therein. In this way, the direction is opposite to the main flux.


The main core flux is opposite to the flux produced by the circulating current in the ring. Therefore, magnetic flux is induced in the shaded and unshaded parts of the motor with a phase difference that lags behind the unshaded pole flux. There is also a spatial displacement of less than 90 degrees between the shadow ring magnetic flux and the main magnetic flux.

Motor flux. Due to this spatial displacement, a rotating magnetic field is generated, which generates torque on the cage motor. To obtain the reversal of the direction of rotation we have to provide two shading coils.

Structure of Shaded Pole Motor


The shaded pole motor is mainly composed of rotor assembly, stator assembly, coil assembly, bracket assembly and connecting fasteners. The rotor assembly is mainly composed of cast aluminum rotor, shaft and thrust washer to prevent the rotor from moving forward and backward, and gasket to adjust the amount of movement; the stator assembly is mainly composed of short-circuit ring and main stator core; the coil assembly is mainly composed of coil, skeleton, lead wire or thermal protector and related insulation wrapping materials; the bracket assembly is divided into front bracket assembly and rear bracket assembly according to the different installation positions of the shaft extension end and the non-shaft extension end.
