WHAT IS INDUCTION HARDENING?
Induction hardening is a form of heat treatment in which a metal part with sufficient carbon content is heated in the induction field and then rapidly cooled. This increases both the hardness and brittleness of the part. Induction heating allows you to have localized heating to a pre-determined temperature and enables you to precisely control the hardening process. Process repeatability is thus guaranteed. Usually, induction hardening is applied to metal parts which need to have great surface wear resistance, while at the same time retaining their mechanical properties. After the induction hardening process is achieved, the metal workpiece needs to be quenched in water, oil or air inorder to obtain specific properties of the surface layer.

APPLICATION RANGE:
1. Heat treatment of metals: hardening, tempering, and annealing.
2. Heating prior to deformation: forging, swaging, upsetting, bending, and piercing.
3. Brazing and Soldering: brazing of steel, brass, and copper to each other in combination and aluminum to aluminum.
4. Shrink fitting: In any manufacturing process, for example, shrink fitting of motor rotors to shafts, shrink fitting of shell casings for compressors.
5. Coating: Of dissimilar metals, prior to insulation, and curing, such as paint.
6. Melting: Of all types of metals.
7. Other applications include crystal growing, cap sealing, sintering, carbon vapor deposition, levitation, exit axial deposition, and plasma generation.
Camshafts are widely used in the automotive industry as a main part of the combustion engines. Due to their overall length and high peripheral speed, they suffer high tensile and torsion stresses during operation, which may significantly reduce their operating life. Softer material favors overcoming these stresses, which, however, results in excessive surface wearing due to the friction between the camshaft and the engine valves.
The goal of the performed hardening process is to increase the wear resistance of the workpiece surface, while the core of the sample remains soft to preserve its tensile strength and torsion resistance. For this purpose, the surface has to be heated to a particular temperature (usually about 800°C) followed by proper cooling. The heating and cooling rates should be strictly observed in order to obtain particular material features. The core of the camshaft should be prevented from heating during the hardening process to preserve its softness.
