Lightning arrester, surge arrester.
(1) An electrical apparatus used to protect electrical equipment
from high transient overvoltage hazards and to limit the duration
and often the magnitude of the renewal current. The term includes
any external clearance necessary for the normal function of the
appliance when installed in operation, regardless of whether it is
a component of the whole.
Note 1: Lightning arresters are usually connected between the grid
conductors and the ground, however, they are sometimes connected
next to the electrical windings or between the conductors.

Features and Principles
AC gapless metal oxide lightning arrester has excellent nonlinear
volt-ampere characteristics, good response characteristics, no
renewal current, large through-current capacity, low residual
voltage, strong overvoltage suppression capability, dirt
resistance, anti-aging, not subject to altitude constraints, simple
structure, no gap, tight sealing, long life, etc.
This arrester in the normal system working voltage, showing high
resistance state, only microampere current through. It presents low
resistance under the action of over-voltage high current, thus
limiting the residual voltage at both ends of the arrester
Role
Lightning arrester is connected between the cable and the earth,
usually in parallel with the protected equipment. Lightning
arrester can effectively protect the communication equipment, once
the abnormal voltage, the arrester will occur action, play a
protective role. When the communication cable or equipment
operating at normal operating voltage, the arrester will not
produce the effect of the ground as a break. Once there is a high
voltage, and endanger the protected equipment insulation, the
arrester immediately act, the high voltage impact current to the
earth, thus limiting the voltage amplitude, to protect the
communication cable and equipment insulation. When the overvoltage
disappears, the arrester quickly restore the original state, so
that the normal work of communication lines.
Therefore, the main role of the arrester is through the parallel
discharge gap or the role of nonlinear resistance, the invasion of
the flow of waves to cut the amplitude, reduce the overvoltage
value of the protected equipment, so as to protect the role of
communication lines and equipment.
Lightning arrester can be used not only to protect against high
voltage generated by lightning, but also to protect against
operating high voltage.
Lightning arrester types
The role of lightning arrester is used to protect various
electrical equipment in the power system from lightning
overvoltage, operating overvoltage, frequency transient overvoltage
impact and damage to an electrical appliance. The main types of
surge arresters are protection gaps, valve-type surge arresters and
zinc oxide surge arresters. Protection gaps are mainly used to
limit atmospheric overvoltage, and are generally used for the
protection of power distribution systems, lines and substation
inlet sections. Valve type arrester and zinc oxide arrester are
used for the protection of substation and power plant, and are
mainly used to limit atmospheric overvoltage in 500KV and below
systems, and will also be used to limit internal overvoltage or for
backup protection of internal overvoltage in ultra-high voltage
systems.
