To what extent should the brake pads be replaced?
Most car owners do not wait for the alarm to replace the brake
pads. During maintenance, the maintenance personnel will make a
simple inspection of the car. The thickness of the brake pads is
the most important one. If it is found that it is thin and meets
the replacement standard, it will recommend the owner to replace
it. The brake pads affect safety. Once they are worn out, there
will be no brakes. Therefore, as long as the maintenance personnel
advise the car owner to replace them, most car owners will follow
the advice and replace them directly. In fact, like other
maintenance items, brake pads are sometimes required to be replaced
in advance. I've seen the earliest brake pads replaced. It's about
one-third thick. It looks very thick. In fact, it can still be used
for a long time.
Then, to what extent should the brake pads be replaced? Generally,
the remaining two or three millimeters should be replaced. Estimate
the thickness yourself. If you don't know how thick two or three
millimeters are, you can also compare it with the height of its
alarm piece. If the alarm piece is about to be ground, it means
it's time to replace it. If the alarm piece has been ground, there
is no need to tangle and replace it directly.
To check the thickness of the brake pad, it is best to remove the
tire so that the remaining thickness can be seen at a glance and
can be seen accurately. In fact, the vast majority of maintenance
personnel are unwilling to remove the tire. They use a flashlight
to look from the outside, check the outer brake pad, and reach into
their hands under the car to check the inner brake pad by hand.
Generally speaking, experienced maintenance personnel can judge
accurately. Even if they don't remove the tire, the thickness they
judge is almost the same as the actual thickness. If you don't have
enough experience, you will often make mistakes in judgment. The
actual thickness is still very thick, and your own judgment is very
thin, you will recommend the owner to replace it. At this time, you
will let the owner replace it when you start talking about it. Of
course, this is not to pit the owner's money, but the maintenance
worker's wrong judgment. After removing it, I found that it was
still very thick. The owner has promised to replace it. As long as
the owner doesn't say, he won't install the old one and continue to
replace it with a new one. In this way, the owner actually spent
wronged money and didn't need to be replaced.
For some cars with more kilometers, the brake discs are deeply
worn. Checking the inner brake pads and touching them by hand often
make some maintenance workers misjudge. The brake disc is deeply
worn, but only the place covered by the brake pad is deeply worn.
The brake pad can not cover the whole brake disc, so the outermost
circle of the brake disc is not worn, but it is still the original
thickness. In this way, some of the brake pads will enter the brake
disc. Assuming that the brake disc is worn 2mm deep and the brake
pad is 4mm deep, from the appearance, the brake pad is only 2mm
deep, because there are 2mm entering the brake disc, you will
mistakenly think that the brake pad should be replaced.
Check the thickness of the brake pad by yourself. If the thickness
is very thick, you can see it from the outside. There is no need to
remove the tire. If the thickness is thin, the line of sight is
oblique from the outside, so it is not easy to grasp the thickness
accurately, and the inner one can not be seen, so it is best to
remove the tire for inspection. Check the thickness of the brake
pads. Check both pads. Many cars have different wear of the two
pads, one thick and the other thin. If you only check one piece and
just look at the thick one, there is a risk that the brake pads
will wear out if you continue to use the car.
