The development and evolution of carbon additive
In the initial stage of the steelmaking industry, the carbon
addition material used was the waste from graphite electrodes,
graphite blocks and other carbon products, which had more
impurities, poor sources, expensive prices, and the produced steel
had poor quality. Later, calcined petroleum coke was used as a
carbon additive, which could ensure the output and the cost was
relatively low, and it was widely adopted by some domestic
steelmaking manufacturers. However, the products produced with this
kind of carbon additive were still relatively ordinary civil steel.
With the development of science and technology, the quality
requirements for steel in high-end fields such as high-grade cars,
warships, aerospace and other high-precision and advanced fields
are also getting higher and higher. In the early 1990s, a carbon
enterprise in Xinzheng, Henan Province developed a new production
method of carbon additive. That is, petroleum coke was loaded into
a graphitization furnace. Under a high-temperature environment, the
arrangement of carbon atoms presents a microscopic graphite
morphology, and at the same time, the content of impurities in the
carbon additive can be reduced, the carbon content of the carbon
additive can be increased, and the content of sulfur, volatile
matter, ash and other substances can be reduced. After practical
application by many domestic and foreign steel enterprises, the
steel produced with this kind of carbon additive as an additive can
greatly improve the quality and performance of the steel and can
meet the demand of special industries for high-quality steel and
special steel. This is also the high-quality carbon additive
recognized in the domestic and international markets.
