Some of these sub-par quality filters may come reasonably close to HEPA filtration, while others will fall significantly short, making them truly inferior.

The technical bulletin from Camfil Farr states that the longevity of a filter depends on the operating conditions. While 10 years is generally the recommended life span, “at minimum, the filter [should] be replaced when the pressure drop reaches two times the initial pressure drop (assuming ‘normal’ design).” Further, some industries, such as bio-pharma, have their own established guidelines stating that filters must be changed at shorter intervals, for example five or seven years.
