For example, self-tapping screws for metal utilize a gap in the continuity of the thread, which generates a flute and a cutting edge similar to those on a standard tap; self-tapping screws for wood or soft plastics often use a tip that tapers to a gimlet point, which forms a tap hole by displacing the surrounding material.
