TP 321 Steel Pipe is a stable stainless steel whose primary advantage is its excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800°F to 1500°F (427°C to 816°C). Alloy 321 stainless steel pipe is stabilized by the addition of titanium to form chromium carbide.
321 321H stainless steel tube is a titanium-stabilized version of 304 for specific applications within the sensitization temperature range. Its resistance to sensitization and higher strength at elevated temperatures make it suitable for applications where 304 will sensitize or where the heat strength of 304L is insufficient. Weld corrosion and intergranular corrosion will not occur when exposed to mildly corrosive environments. However, welding 321 should never be used in highly oxidizing environments as it is susceptible to "knife line" erosion.
However, in operating temperature environments above 500°C, 321 is the better choice and therefore has its own advantages. Alloy 321 stainless steel pipe is also beneficial for high temperature use due to its good mechanical properties. Alloy 321 stainless steel has higher creep and stress rupture properties than Alloy 304, and Alloy 304L in particular may also be considered for sensitive and intergranular corrosion problems.
