Fluorescent lights have found ubiquitous applications since their commercialization. A spike voltage is applied to the gas which causes ionization and subsequent emission of UV light. The UV excites the phosphors which then fluorescence visible light as well as emit heat. The phosphor type dictates the spectrum of the bulb. The spectra are usually very locally peaked corresponding to atomic transitions characteristic of the phosphors.
