Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) Alloy Sheet and Plate

Composition:

  • Titanium (Ti): 90%
  • Aluminum (Al): 6%
  • Vanadium (V): 4%

Properties:

  • High Strength: Grade 5 titanium, also known as Ti-6Al-4V, is the most commonly used titanium alloy. It has a high tensile strength ranging from 900 to 1,200 MPa and is approximately 30% stronger than pure titanium.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to corrosion in many environments, including seawater, acids, and alkaline solutions.
  • Ductility: Good ductility and formability, making it suitable for complex shapes and forming processes.
  • Fatigue Resistance: It offers good fatigue strength and can withstand repetitive loading and stress, ideal for aerospace applications.
  • Workability: Good machinability but requires special handling due to its hardness.
  • Density: 4.43 g/cm³, which is still relatively light compared to other metals with similar strength.
  • Weldability: Excellent weldability with most standard welding methods.

Applications:

  • Aerospace: Aircraft components, turbine blades, airframes, and engine parts.
  • Medical: Implants, surgical devices, and prosthetics.
  • Marine: Submarine components, ship parts.
  • Automotive: High-performance racing parts.

Titanium Foil Sheets:

Titanium foil sheets are thin sheets of titanium that are typically less than 0.15 mm thick. They are used for a variety of specialized applications due to their unique properties.

Properties:

  • Flexibility: Very flexible and can be shaped into intricate designs without cracking.
  • Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Despite being thin, titanium foil retains its high strength and corrosion resistance.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Titanium foil offers excellent corrosion resistance and is commonly used in corrosive environments such as the aerospace and marine industries.
  • Lightweight: It is extremely lightweight, making it ideal for applications where weight is a critical factor.

Applications:

  • Aerospace: Used for aircraft parts, heat shields, and seals.
  • Medical: Used in surgical instruments, implants, and prosthetics.
  • Electronics: Used for applications requiring high precision and strength without adding significant weight.

Different Grades of Titanium:

Grade 2 titanium is the most widely used of the pure titanium grades. Comprising 99% titanium, it provides higher strength and greater corrosion resistance than Grade 1, commonly used in aerospace, medical implants, chemical processing, and marine environments. Grade 2 titanium has a tensile strength of 50,000 psi (345 MPa) and a yield strength of 45,000 psi (310 MPa), with excellent resistance to seawater corrosion. Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) is the most commonly used titanium alloy, containing 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, offering a combination of high strength and low weight. It is widely used in aerospace, military, medical implants, and high-end automotive parts.

Grade 5 titanium has a tensile strength of 130,000 psi (896 MPa) and a yield strength of 120,000 psi (827 MPa), with excellent corrosion and high-temperature resistance. Overall, Grade 1 and Grade 2 are mainly used in applications where corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication are essential, while Grade 5 excels in high-strength, corrosion-resistant, and high-temperature applications, making it ideal for high-performance uses.

Applications of Titanium:

  • Aerospace: Titanium is extensively used in aircraft components, turbine blades, and rocket engines due to its strength, lightweight, and high-temperature resistance.
  • Medical: Titanium's biocompatibility (non-toxic, non-reactive) makes it ideal for implants, prosthetics, and surgical instruments.
  • Marine: Used in ship hulls, submarine components, and offshore oil drilling platforms for its resistance to seawater corrosion.
  • Automotive: Lightweight titanium is used in high-performance and racing vehicles to reduce weight without sacrificing strength.
  • Chemical Processing: The metal's resistance to many aggressive chemicals makes it ideal for tanks, pipes, and reactors in industrial applications.
