2500mm swing diameter Horizontal CNC Lathe with Boring Bar
attachment
Turning lathe machine with boring bar attachment
Face machining is a basic operation that can be performed on lathes
and milling machines, both of which involve the removal of material
to produce varying machined parts. In addition to the difference
between turning and milling the face, we will also check what is
the face operation and how the face tool works in the CNC lathe.

What operations are facing on the lathe?
Face milling is commonly used in CNC turning and boring. It refers
to the process of removing material from the end and/or shoulder of
a workpiece, using face tools to produce a flat, smooth surface
perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the workpiece. If there is
a hole in the center of the blank, the semi-center should be used
to stabilize and support the workpiece.
What factors will affect the quality of docking operations?
Speed and feed, the size and material of the cutting tool, the
type of material to be processed, and the method of clamping the
workpiece will affect the quality and efficiency of the end face of
the lathe. Choose roughing or finishing according to the material
to be removed.
How to use facing tools on a lathe?
After the workpiece is fixed on the CNC lathe and the end tool is
installed in the tool holder of the frame, when the tool rotates in
the jaws of the chuck, it will feed vertically along the rotation
axis of the part to cut the workpiece accurately地 required length.
CNC machine tools can provide power feed instead of manual feed to
obtain a smoother surface finish.
What is the difference between a turning surface and a milling
surface?
1. Use a lathe for turning and a milling machine for turning.
2. In the turning face, the part is rotating, and the cutting tool
is stationary at the same position, while in the milling face, the
face tool is rotating relative to the fixed workpiece.
3. The workpiece is usually cylindrical on the lathe, and you can
face rectangular or special-shaped materials to make cubes and
other non-cylindrical parts.
4. Lathe facing is a turning operation, including boring, grooving,
reaming, etc., while milling facing is the opposite of turning.
How to face the end of the part?
The first thing you need to do is to set up the tool. Loosen the
tool holder and tilt the tool about 10 to 15 degrees from the end
of the blank to leave a little gap at the end. We also need to
center the tool vertically.
