expand
If the user's automation task requires more than 8 SM, FM or CP
module slots, the S7-300 (except CPU 312 and CPU 312C) can be
expanded:
Up to 32 modules can be connected to the midpoint controller and 3
expansion racks:
A total of 3 Expansion Units (EU) can be connected to the Midpoint
Controller (CC). Eight modules can be connected to each CC/EU.
Connect via interface template:
Each CC/EU has its own interface module. On the midpoint controller
it is inserted in a slot next to the CPU and automatically handles
communication with the expansion unit.
Expansion via IM 365:
1 extension unit can be extended up to 1 m away; supply voltage is
also supplied through the extension unit.
Expansion via IM 360/361:
3 extension units, the distance between CC and EU and between EU
and EU is 10m.
Install separately:
For a separate CC/EU, it is also possible to install at greater
distances. Distance between two adjacent CC/EU or EU/EU: up to 10m.
Flexible mounting options:
CC/EU can be installed either horizontally or vertically. In this
way, the space requirements can be met to the maximum extent
possible. The S7-300 has different communication interfaces:
Communication processor for connecting AS-Interface, PROFIBUS and
PROFINET/Industrial Ethernet cable systems.
Communication processors for point-to-point connections
Multipoint Interface (MPI), integrated in the CPU;
It is a cost-effective solution to connect programmers/PCs, HMI
systems and other SIMATIC S7/C7 automation systems at the same
time.
The SIMATIC S7-300 is connected to the PROFIBUS DP line system via
a communications processor or via a CPU with an integrated PROFIBUS
DP interface. Through a CPU with a PROFIBUS DP master/slave
interface, a high-speed distributed automation system can be
constructed and the operation is greatly simplified.
From the user's point of view, distributed I/O processing on
PROFIBUS DP is no different from centralized I/O processing (same
configuration, addressing and programming).
The following devices can be connected as master:
SIMATIC S7-300 (via CPU with PROFIBUS DP interface or PROFIBUS DP
CP)
SIMATIC S7-400 (via CPU with PROFIBUS DP interface or PROFIBUS DP
CP)
SIMATIC C7 (via C7 with PROFIBUS DP interface or PROFIBUS DP CP)
SIMATIC S5-115U/H, S5-135U and S5-155U/H with IM 308
SIMATIC 505
For performance reasons, no more than 2 masters are connected per
line.

Field equipment
Although the programmer/PC or OP with STEP 7 is the master station
on the line, only the MPI function is used, and the OP function can
also be partially provided through PROFIBUS DP.
Process communication via PROFINET IO
The SIMATIC S7-300 is connected to the PROFINET IO line system via
a communications processor or via a CPU with an integrated PROFINET
interface. Through the CPU with PROFIBUS interface, a high-speed
distributed automation system can be constructed, and the operation
is greatly simplified.
From the user's point of view, there is no difference between
distributed I/O processing on PROFINET IO and centralized I/O
processing (same configuration, addressing and programming).

Field equipment
Process communication via AS-Interface
The S7-300 is equipped with a communications processor (CP 342-2)
suitable for connecting field devices (AS-Interface slaves) via
AS-Interface lines.
For more information, see Communications Processors.
Data communication via CP or integrated interface (point-to-point)
Point-to-point connections can be established cost-effectively via
the CP 340/CP 341 communications processors or the integrated
interfaces of the CPU 313C-2 PtP or CPU 314C-2 PtP. There are three
physical transmission media that support different communication
protocols:
20 mA (TTY) (only CP 340/CP 341)
RS 232C/V.24 (only CP 340/CP 341)
RS422/RS485

The following devices can be connected:

companies
printer
robot control
Scanners, Barcode Readers, etc.
The special function blocks are included in the scope of supply of
the Communication Function Manual.
Data communication using multipoint interface (MPI)
MPI (Multipoint Interface) is the communication interface
integrated on the SIMATIC S7-300 CPUs. It can be used for simple
network tasks.
MPI can simultaneously connect several programmers/PCs with STEP 7,
HMI systems (OP/OS), S7-300 and S7-400.
Full data:
The "full data communication" service enables cyclic data exchange
between networked CPUs. One S7-300 CPU can exchange data with up to
4 data packets, each data contains 22 bytes of data, and 16 CPUs
can participate in data exchange at the same time (using STEP 7
V4.x).
For example, one CPU can be allowed to access the input/output of
another CPU. Full data communication is only possible via the MPI
interface.
Internal communication line (C-bus):
The MPI of the CPU is directly connected to the C line of the
S7-300. Therefore, the address of the FM/CP module connected to the
C line can be found directly from the programmer through MPI.
Powerful communication technology:
Up to 32 MPI nodes.
There are several communication interfaces per CPU for S7 Basic
Communication with SIMATIC S7-300/-400.
There are several communication interfaces per CPU for S7
communication with PG/PC, SIMATIC HMI system and SIMATIC
S7-300/400.
Data transfer rate 187.5 kbit/s or 12 Mbit/s
Flexible configuration options:
Reliable components for establishing MPI communication: Line
cables, line connectors and RS 485 repeaters of the PROFIBUS and
"Distributed I/O" series. Using these components, the optimal
adjustment of the design can be achieved according to the
requirements. For example, up to 10 repeaters can be turned on
between any two MPI nodes to bridge larger distances.
Data communication via CP
The SIMATIC S7-300 can be connected to PROFIBUS and Industrial
Ethernet line systems via the CP 342 and CP 343 communication
processors.
