What is CNC bending?

CNC bending, also known as metal forming, is the manufacturing process of bending metal sheets (or plates) into various shapes and contours using a CNC bending machine. Just like a punch press, a press brake is a fully numerically controlled (computer numerically controlled) machine.

Equipped with a top tool or punch, the lower half of the press brake will be fitted with a V-die or special dies

Metal bending or sheet metal forming occurs when a material such as an aluminum or stainless steel sheet or plate is placed between a punch and a die. Once the punch makes contact with the material (pinch point), it will begin to press the punch and the material below it into the die opening, bending the metal

The depth of the punch and the material entering the die opening control the angle of the bend. For flange height or bend depth, the CNC program will move the backstop forward or backward (depending on programming) to limit how far the inserted workpiece can go
