What is the purpose of an idler pulley?
The idler pulley is a common part that's found on the majority of the vehicles on the road. Its primary function is to provide tension and guide the engine drive belt. These belts wrap around the various parts of the engine such as the power steering pump, alternator, water pump etc
What is the difference between pulley and idler?
Because drive pulleys are directly connected to motors, they turn at whatever RPM (revolutions per minute) the motor turns. Idler pulleys instead are spun by the belt connected to the drive pulley. If you change the size of a drive pulley, you can change the speed of the belt and the driven pulley.
