A gear shaper is a gear-shaped or rack-shaped gear processing tool.
Shaper cutters are used to machine internal and external meshing
spur gears and helical cylindrical gears according to the
generation method (see gear machining). The characteristic of the
gear shaper is that it can process shoulder gears, multi-stage
gears and herringbone gears without empty grooves. The
special-shaped gear shaper can also process other workpieces of
various shapes.
Gear shaper knives are divided into four types: disc, bowl,
cylinder and taper shank. The disc gear shaper is mainly used for
processing internal and external meshing spur gears, gear shaper
helical gears and herringbone gears. The bowl shaper mainly
processes spur gears with shoulders and multiple internal and
external meshing. It differs from the disc shaper in that the nut
for clamping can be accommodated in the body of the shaper.
Therefore, processing is not hindered. The cylindrical gear shaper
is used to process internal gears and small external gears, which
are screwed on the main shaft of the gear shaper through the thread
of the inner hole. The taper shank gear shaper is mainly used for
processing internal meshing spur gears and helical gears.
