Effective Push Back Pallet Racking System with Increased Productivity and Safety

Push-back pallet racking is a high-density storage solution using nested wheeled carts that move along a slightly inclined track attached to standard pallet racking. Pallets are loaded and unloaded from the same side for a LIFO (last in, first out) stock cycle. Push-back pallet racking is typically designed to store pallets from 2 to 6 deep, double the storage capacity of standard selective racking.

For optimum productivity and to ensure worker safety, your warehouse team should be fully trained in proper push-back racking operating procedures. When operating a push-back pallet racking system, staff should follow some of the following basic procedures:

  • Ensure all forklift operators are well-trained.

  • Carry out pallet quality checks.

  • Use GMA-style wooden or plastic pallets.

  • Ensure no veneer is loose or falling off.

  • Check product loads, check loads for overhang and secure loose cartons, flaps, or shrink wrap.

  • Ensure load weight is below-rated load capacity.

Proper Loading in Push Back Pallet Racking System:

1. Forklift - lift the pallet load approximately 3 to 4 inches above the first car - enter the system and place the pallet in the center of the first car. Exit the system slowly.

2. Align the base of the 2nd pallet with the base of the 1st pallet, just above the exposed trolley, and as you place the 2nd pallet on top of the 2nd trolley, gently push the 1st pallet backward and so on until you reach the last pallet in the system.

3. The last pallet will not sit on the trolley - it will sit directly on the push-back rail. Again making sure the load is in the center of the lane, lower the last pallet onto the track, making sure it is behind the pallet stop.

Proper Unloading in Push Back Pallet Racking System:

1. Central forklift with the front pallet of the system, slowly enter the lane. Lift the front pallet 3-4 inches to clear any pallet stops or obstructions.

2. Slowly extract the pallet, allowing subsequent loads and the trolley to slide forward to the aisle face at a controlled speed.

3. Unload the remaining pallets of the system in accordance with step 1.
